How we speak to ourselves
matters
People who cope well are
thoughtful about how they react to
things that are difficult.
They allow themselves to have
feelings, remind themselves of
what they are grateful for, and
focus on what they can control at
the time. This doesn't mean they
ignore the difficult situation.
We can 'self talk' to remind
ourselves of our strengths:
I can get through this.
I am not going to be a victim.
I need some time to calm myself
down.
I have things to be grateful for.
Feeling overwhelmed can be
caused by having too much to
handle.
Calming skills or 'Grounding' can
help. This booklet suggests several
calming skills and exercises that
you can choose from and learn.
When times are tough, you may
need to remind yourself that you
want to and can control your
emotions.
Remember your strengths and do
your best. It may take practice but
you will get there.
